Recreation Softball Divisions

The following is meant to give a general description of each softball league to a parent and may not include all rules. If you have further questions please email the league director.

6U Softball league –

  • Introductory league, teach the basics of catching, batting, throwing and running bases.
  • Players provided with Tie-dye shirt and socks with MYBSA or sponsor logo on shirt and a visor.
  • Team practice prior to season is up to discretion of team coach.
  • Parade is held on a Saturday morning on a date to be decided later.
  • Equipment needed: glove, bat and batting helmet
  • Optional equipment: Baseball or Softball cleats
  • Practice: Optional and will depend on coach, Never more than 1 practice per week.
  • Play approximately 10 games. 2 games per week. 1 during week and 1 on Saturday.
  • Games are 3 innings.An inning consists of both teams batting and playing the field with each player batting 1 time.
  • Batting – The teams coach throws up to 5 pitches to the batter.If a ball is not put in play, the batter will then hit off of the tee.
  • Fielding – all players in field. Fill infield positions then spread rest out in outfield. Players should get opportunities to play different positions. A rotation by inning each game is preferred.
  • Score is not kept.
  • Outs are made.If a child is out, then they will go back to the dugout.
  • This is an introductory and instructional league.Coaches and PARENTS need to keep this in mind at ALL TIMES.This IS NOT a competitive league.They are here to have fun and learn the basics of the game.
  • Most important have fun!!!!!

8U Softball league –
 

  • A developmental league, in that coaches are allowed in the field when a team is on defense and the batting teams coaches pitches.
  • Players provided with Tie-dye shirt and socks with MYBSA or sponsor logo on shirt and visor.
  • 10 to 12 players per team.
  • Coach’s generally practice 2 to 4 time prior to season, then no more than 1 day per week during season. Some coaches do not practice once season starts.
  • 8U Softball teams do participate in Opening Day Parade
  • Equipment needed: glove, bat, batting helmet (Team bats and batting helmets will be available) ,softball or soccer cleats.
  • Play approximately 12 games. 2 games per week. Generally, 1 during week at 6:00  or 8:00 pm, and 1 on Saturday. No recreation games are played on Wednesday or Sunday. Rainout may be rescheduled at the request of both teams coach’s.
  • Games will have a 1 hour 45 minute time limit or 6 innings whichever comes first.
  • Season starts in middle of May. No weekday late games until school out. Season ends first week in July. End of year Tournament is normally played last week in June or first week in July.
  • Batting – a player will be thrown 5 pitches from a JUGS pitching machine, if the player swings and misses 3 pitches or does not hit any of the 5 pitches fair the batter is out and will return to dug out. If the batter fouls the last pitch he does continue to get another pitch until he hits the ball fair or misses. 3 outs or 10 batters end the inning for the offensive team.
  • Fielding – 10 players in field, 6 infield positions including catcher with all protection gear and 4 outfielders.

  • Player fielding pitching position in this league must wear a protective face mask. (provided)

  • The play must be stopped by the defensive team. Once the runners have given themselves up, (aka stopped running) and have no intention of advancing to teh next base, the play will be declared dead. If the runner(s) have stopped and the ball has been returned to teh pitchers circle the play is dead.
  • Score is kept. The game is over if either team is behind by 15 after 4 innings, or 10 after 5 innings, or 6 innings.
  • Most important have fun!!!!!

10U Softball league –
 

  • Players provided with Sleeveless Poly blend shirt and socks with MYBSA or sponsor logo on shirt. No visor.
  • 10 to 12 players per team.
  • Coach’s generally practice 2 to 4 time prior to season, then no more than 1 day per week during season. Some coaches do not practice once season starts.
  • 10U Softball teams do participate in Opening Day Parade
  • Equipment needed: glove, bat, batting helmet (Team bats and batting helmets will be available) ,softball or soccer cleats.
  • Play approximately 12 games per season on Field 5. 2 games per week. Generally, 1 during week at 6:00  or 8:00 pm, and 1 on Saturday. No recreation games are played on Wednesday or Sunday. Rainout may be rescheduled at the request of both teams coach’s.
  • Games will have a 1 hour 45 minute time limit or 6 innings whichever comes first.
